POINT ship, Berlin 2003That summer we made quite a few things out of polystyrene. Because most of his schoolmates were on holiday, Zasd had a school studio so we had a good base. This was the most poetic event. When we were in Venice for the Biennial, admiring all the boats and gondolas, Zasd had drawn a style in the shape of a ship. A great idea which was easy put into practice. As a child, I built a few models but never properly. Graffiti brought me back to model making, via a detour, and I started making my first Point ship about 6 metres long. I think it was Sunday and we went to release the ships. Zasd made individual floating letters and Flesh quickly put together a large letter F, so I was the only one building a classic ship. In the park by the canal where we unloaded our creations we immediately became the centre of attention of most boys who were out on a walk with their parents. Each time we released a new one into the water we received a round of applause. Would any of them have thought that they were applauding graffiti writers who actually vandalise the city? Though it wasn’t our intention, we let the river wash our creations away. |
