Cobbles; Zizkov, Prague 2007

I was surprised at just how much children can be fascinated by such a simple thing as painting cobbles. Walking around Prague in the spring one comes across loose cobbles nearly on every corner. I had the idea to pick them up, decorate them as Easter eggs (which is a little bit our national tradition), and return them to their original place. Every child that passes by becomes totally hooked. They obviously like the colours, but there must be more than that to it. Perhaps they like the fact that something is suddenly out of place and they don’t know why. It makes adults think, whilst children simply enjoy it. This hole was in Zizkov, which is a sort of ghetto, and those children spend a lot of time in the street. For them, this was a big event! It made them spontaneously happy, you can tell from their smile.
